Intel Core i9 and the X-treme line-up

Recently at the keynote conference in Computex 2017, held in Taiwan, Intel revealed it's HEDT( High-End Desktop) processors, the Intel i9 and the Extreme line-up of CPUs. Mainly intended towards enthusiasts, will this be Intel's redemption against AMD's Ryzen Threadripper, or will it
itself get ripped up ? Checkout the post : Ryzen Threadripper : It rips your Intel!

Intel's brand new, Extreme tagged CPUs include the latest addition to the Core i family, the Core i9. The latest processor line-up offers upto 18 cores of CPU performance, including 10,12,14 and 16 core CPUs. The most powerful of them all would be the Core i9-7980XE, a 18 core-36 threaded processor priced at $1999. Although, much has not yet been revealed about the rest of the specs, except the base model, but considering the price point, one might expect top of the line performance from this CPU.

The base model amongst these five would be the Core i9- 7900X priced at $999, a 10 core-20 thread CPU. It has a base clock of 3.3 GHz which boosts as high as 4.3 GHz with an additional boost of upto 4.5 GHz thanx to Intel's TurboBoost 3.0 technology.

All the new core i9 processors belongs to Intel's
X-Series of processor. The rest of the members encompasses revamped versions of the previously existing 7th Generation Kaby Lake Intel i7 and i5 processors, and the previous Sky Lake processors as well, which are now more appropriately called the Kaby Lake-X and the Sky Lake-X respectively.

The highest variant of the newly launched CPUs, is the Core i7-7820X, which is a 8 core/ 16 thread CPU with a base clock of 3.6 GHz and a boost of 4.3 GHz plus an additional gain of upto 4.5 GHz by TurboBoost 3.0. The base variant is a Quad core Sky Lake-X core i5 7640-X, with a base and boost clock speeds of 4.0 and 4.2 GHz respectively. All of the new chips are expected to support upto quad channel DDR4-2666 memory.

Intel's new X-treme line of processors require LGA 2066 socket motherboard with X-299 chipset. Intel has targetted these processors mainly towards the more enthusiastic members of the community, those who spend most of the time creating 4 to 8K videos and rendering high quality images, also with a need to relinquish high end PC games.

Of course that includes gamers, as well as the content creators and developers whose work environment is mainly oriented towards processor hungry applications like Photoshop Express and others as such. Therefore, increasing the processor count would definitely provide more juice for 4K and HDR 10 ready projects to be compiled faster. Also, Intel has promises secure overclocking for the processors, and with the help of the new X-299 chipset, a mammoth overclocking experience is surely expected. As much the price is to be paid for these processors, their performance, is duely expected to "Extreme".
