Bluetooth 5.0 : Multiples of 2

 -Niladri Sarkar

In today's fast paced world, Bluetooth have virtually lost its significance and monopoly since it was first introduced in 1998. Due to the tough competition from WiFi, Bluetooth have really lost its place, where it was used as the only available way of wireless transfer of multimedia and data in the low end smartphones, multimedia phones and feature phones, with transfer rates and range being the main reasons of abandonment.

The only things today where we use use Bluetooth for are probably Bluetooth speakers and Bluetooth headphones (although there is a huge upsurge in the number of IoT devices which are coming up to Bluetooth for wireless communication, as WiFi driver is a bit costlier and also more intricate to handle)

Nevertheless, Bluetooth have kept on upgrading their protocols, with some minor fixes and changes. But with this latest update of Bluetooth 5.0, Bluetooth have really shown some great work.

A quick short walk through about the title :

The most noticeable difference with Bluetooth 5.0 is that it takes very small amount of time to pair
with your devices (practically not instantly, but within 2-3 seconds, which before needed at least 6-7 seconds to find and pair to respective device), and that is precisely around 2x faster than before.

Coming to the point of range, the range is exactly 2x (at 500kbps) and 4x (at 12kbps) than its predecessor technology. Well you may think that it is not that much appreciable, but from a practical piont of view, there have been a great amount of increase in range of freedom. The table below will speak the figures

This will allow you to transcend you from your room to your backyard, or even, around your gym, with that Bluetooth headphones still on. Security of your device looked after.

The most development is done for the throughput of the data, and that is exactly 8x than before. This is very much helpful for those IoT devices, as lot more innovative ideas have come into existence very recently. Add in the lower power consumption, even the smallest devices operating on button cells can easily support Bluetooth, which otherwise was known as battery hungry earlier.

Now comes the most interesting thing, the wireless coexistence.
Prior to bluetooth 5.0, there would be the option to stream music to only one output source, but with 5.0, you can easily stream it to two sources. No wait, have I told you that this means you can get a stereo experience ?!
Well, yes. The left and the right channel will be streamed from the two different speakers, so goodbye to the mono days.

But the sad news is that, only Samsung S8 is currently using this Bluetooth 5.0 technology, and the coexistence is termed as dual audio under the Bluetooth menu, so it will be quite a time before it will come mainstream.

Verdict - wait for some more time, maybe a couple of months before it is available broadly
