Make way for MIUI 9

Xiaomi users rejoice, for the long awaited update has finally arrived. The company announced the upcoming update few days earlier back in China, assuring fans they won't have to wait long for the update. So what has Xiaomi planned to surprise us ?

Overview
Xiaomi will be releasing the update vis-a-vis with Android Nougat 7.0. Xiaomi's Android based custom UI has been a favorite for a lot of people mostly because of it's fluid dynamics and fast performance which is as close any aftermarket ROM could ever get close to stock Android. And Xiaomi promises to deliver such overwhelming performance again. MIUI 9 beta looks snappier than ever with fast transition animations reducing app loading times. Also, MIUI 9 offers better RAM management schemes as well.
Along with such enhancements, MIUI 9 will also be coupled with the standard features of Android Nougat, like split-screen mode and the ability to reply to texts from the notification shade itself.
Other than these, Xiaomi mainly highlighted three new features - Smart Assistant, Image search and Smart app launcher.

Smart App Launcher
The smart app launcher allows users to identify and view information regarding certain topics or terms that they come across while reading or while using any other apps. What the Smar app launcher does is that if a person is unable to find out information regarding stuff on their screen, they may long press that item, say a famous person's name perhaps, and the available information regarding that specific person would pop-up. This is how Smart App Launcher works. Another use of it would be to buy an item by long pressing the picture of that item without even opening any online shopping app.

Image Search
This is indeed one of the handy features included in MIUI 9. Most of the smartphone users have tons of pictures in their phone, which makes it difficult to search for a specific picture when needed. The Image search feature simplifies this method to search for an image. Typing a keyword related to the picture you want, say "birthday" or "anniversary" etc, would bring up a series of related pictures from where we could get our desired picture. Really a smart move by Xiaomi.

Split Screen
A much awaited feature since MIUI 8, Nougat's split screen feature finally lands in MIUI 9. Increase your efficiency through Split Screen. Enter "Recent Apps" mode by tapping on your Menu key button, tap on "Split Screen Mode" at the top left. Choose the app you want to split from the recent apps, then drag it onto the upper part. Due to the rather special usage scenarios of split screen view, MIUI apps will automatically determine whether to allow the use of the feature according to its display requirements. For example, Dialer will not support Split Screen.

Smart Assistant
Smart Assistant to Xiaomi is what Bixby is to Samsung, Google Assistant is to Android and Siri is to Apple. However, it doesn't seem so that Xiaomi's new assistant could top the likes of Bixby, Siri etc. But that doesn't mean it's incapable. The Smart Assistant can be accessed by swiping to the right from the home screen. Then a tray of multiple information would appear and show stuff like recently used apps, most frequently used apps and contacts, custom widgets etc. We can also keep our to-do lists, schedules, tasks etc. as well.
Other than these features, the UI would provide other standard features of Android Nougat, like split-screen mode and others.

Design
Xiaomi has always kept a subtle design statement. A very minimalistic design queue that really sets the phones apart. MIUI 9 comes with a very similar yet adequately update design with MIUI 9. App icons are a bit smaller this time, and are provided with certain cool and noticeable animations. Xiaomi has brought 3 new themes bundled as well. The notification tray allows a filtering option that helps keep unwanted notifications aside, amongst other design changes, including a new lock-screen too.

Availability
Xiaomi announced the release of the first developer ROM on August 11, exclusively in China, and will only support for Xiaomi Mi 6, Mi 5X, and Redmi Note 4X.
The second release of the China Developer ROM would be on August 25 and would support more devices like Xiaomi Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5c, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro, and Redmi 4X. Meanwhile, the changes in optimisation are noticeable.

The Global ROM is to be made available to the users in late September, and would support all Xiaomi devices, excluding the Mi 1/1S and Mi 2A.
