Google Pixel 2 : Final Expectations

- Srijit Sutradhar

What are the two most anticipated phones of 2017? Well I'm pretty sure anyone can answer that even blindfolded. Apart from the iPhone 8, rather the 2017 edition or the anniversary edition or whatever, the most rumored is the Google Pixel 2. Google releases a flagship every year, previously Nexus now Pixel, with premium stock Android that get the most latest updates. The Pixel range of flagship smartphones were released last year with top-of-the-line specifications and probably the best camera ever boasted on a mobile device.

Since we already saw the most fluid software on the fist Pixel, we kind of think the new Pixel will excel in better hardware. And since the phone is already around the corner, leaks and mock-ups and rumors are popping up. One thing we do know for sure is that the new Pixel XL will be made by LG. Following the trend set by LG and Samsung, the Pixel will also have a big screen with on-screen navigation buttons and slimmer bezels. Recent leaks confirmed by the Android Police say that the display on the new Pixel XL will be 6.0 inches and will be AMOLED. The big display will also be sporting a 2:1 aspect ratio, similar to the LG G6, with rounded corners. The glass edges will be curved into the frame, unlike the floating curves of the S8.

"The rear of the new XL is curved like last year's phone, though perhaps with sharper corners this time around. The fingerprint scanner now sits below the glass  "window" at the top of the phone, as opposed to inside it, likely because the window itself seems substantially smaller than the one on the 2016 XL."

Things will probably wont look similar on the exterior. Here, the first thing to notice from the leak provided by the Android Police is the glass on the back. It is shorter now where earlier it was big enough to fit the fingerprint scanner within itself. Speaking of the fingerprint scanner, It is unlikely that Google is ready to follow Vivo and Apple and embed it right under the screen. Yes, the technology is new and nifty, but they need to adapt before everyone buys into it.

The second thing which we immediately notice on the back is the large camera. The last year's camera for Pixel, even though being the best smartphone camera in the list, was very small unlike ever seen before. We are left in the blind as there are no rumors about the camera quality or whether Google is using a new sensor. We even don't see a dual camera set up, but considering what we saw with the Pixel last year, we can be optimistic that this will a fantastic camera too.
Like other flagships this year, the Pixel XL is also going to use the Snapdragon 835 chipset. Something great about the 835 chip is the camera performance it delivers, with an always-on HDR as the chip can process multiple layers of exposure easily. HDR already being great on the previous Pixel, is now going to be even better with the 835.

The biggest rumor from the Android Police leak is that the Pixel XL will sport a squeezable frame like the newly launched HTC U11. The squeezable frame is a relatively new concept and is highly unlikely that Google will skip it in its flagship device. But keeping in mind that Pixel phones are made as an entire package full of awesome and not just to highlight a new feature, Google will not make the squeezable the selling point of the device. Instead, the squeeze might be remapped to launch various applications and services as per the user concerns and not lock it down on one function.

We can also see from the purportedly leaked picture that the speakers up front are wide. There have been rumors that Google will supposedly ditch the bottom faced speakers in favor of a dual front firing speakers for better audio experience, pretty much like the HTC Boomsound. The last year's Pixel's bottom faced speakers were pretty much its weakest component.
The ports will be a USB Type-C, obviously, and a headphone jack, most probably. The glass window on the back assures that there wont be wireless charging even this time. Waterproofing? Meh, there hasn't been any proof so far.

Keeping in mind that all the leaks and rumors were regarding the Pixel XL so far, the smaller Pixel 2 will be much more compact and might be a notch up what we have now. It will surely come with the updated hardware like better camera and speakers, but also might come with thicker bezels and lack the 2:1 big display.
That said, the Pixel and Pixel XL were the most hyped devices last year, and is pretty much the same for their next generation devices which are about to drop. Google has not yet announced the released date, heck they not yet teased what they are up to, but keeping in mind the previous devices were launched in October last year, it may be pretty much the same this year too. So there is much time left for more rumors and leaks to come up until the final devices are released.

Hope you enjoyed reading. Let us know whether you too are hyped for the new Pixel devices. Until then, have a fantastic day. Peace.
