Samsung's Linux-based Tizen 4.0 Released
It's been a while since we heard of Tizen - Samsung's homegrown Operating System that's meant to connect all its future high-end as well as low-end devices. Well, wait no longer. Samsung Electronics has announced its open source Linux based Operating System, Tizen 4.0, at the San Francisco Tizen Developer Conference, 2017.
Tizen 4.0 is set to arrive later this year, possibly September, with a nifty handful of features for both consumers and developers, including compatibility for Visual Studio, Microsoft .NET and IoT optimization.
While Tizen 4.0 is set to target lot more devices, with the introduction of Tizen Real Time, extra focus is being given to IoT applications, which can run anything from vacuum cleaners to washing machines and can directly communicate with Tizen 4.0-powered units.
“Since launching, Tizen has become the OS for nearly all of Samsung’s products, and with its record of sales growth, proven itself as the most successful Linux-based embedded OS in the world. Among open collaborations, and as we enter the IoT era, we expect Tizen will open new opportunities for the future of IoT,” said Hyogun Lee, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics and Chair of the Tizen Technical Steering Group.
Looking back, since Tizen 1.0 was announced at TDC 2012, it has made its way into many Samsung devices, ranging from Smart TVs to smartwatches. With the introduction of Tizen 4.0. Samsung wants to bring it to smartphones and also integrate it into household and IoT devices with Tizen RT.
Being the no-nonsense gambler it is, Samsung has teamed up with Microsoft to enable developers to easily create Tizen apps using popular programming languages, particularly Microsoft .NET and Xamarin UI framework, all while working on the Visual Studio.
Samsung is also cooperating with Samsung ARTIK, Broadlink, Commax, and Gympse to expand its ecosystem.
Note: At the TDC, Samsung also unveiled the ARTIK 053, a lightweight IoT chipset. Read here.
